When buying or selling a vessel, it is important to discuss and agree with the other party whether the VHF radio call sign and MMSI number will remain with the vessel.
These identifiers do not automatically transfer with ownership. Permission must be granted by the current holder of the call sign and MMSI number for them to be reassigned to the new owner.
Completing this transfer process is essential to ensure that accurate ownership and contact details are available to the appropriate authorities—especially in the event of an overdue or missing vessel.
